How to choose a car air freshener

A quick guide to picking the right car scent for your drive.

Why gel lasts longer than paper

A paper hanging tree gives up most of its scent in the first few days. A gel car air freshener holds its fragrance in the gel and releases it gradually, so the scent holds steady for weeks instead.

An Overtake jar runs around four weeks in a coupe, sedan, hatch or ute, a little less in bigger cabins. The gel visibly shrinks as it goes, so you can always see where it's at. More in our guide to how long a car air freshener lasts.

Pick your strength

Our car scents sit at different levels, so you can choose what suits you.

  • Most distinct: Cool Melon, Citrus Lift, Aqua Fresh, Berry Chill. The ones to start with in a bigger cabin.
  • Refined and balanced: JDM Fizz, Grape Ice, Very Vanilla. Present without taking over.
  • Subtle: Auto Aurora. Sits quietly in the background.

Not sure? Aqua Fresh, Citrus Lift and Cool Melon are our three most popular and the safest first pick. Every jar has a lid: lid on for subtler, lid off for more.

Where to put it

Front of the cabin, where air moves: the centre cup holders or near a vent. Skip the dash under the windscreen, centre console storage, deep door pockets and the parcel shelf. Heat and dead air are what cut a freshener short.

Car perfume, car fragrance or car deodoriser?

People search for all three, and they mean slightly different things. A car perfume or car fragrance adds scent to the cabin, which is what our gel jars do. A deodoriser is about the smell itself, and fragrance on its own won't fix a smell at the source, so clean that first.

For carpet and fabric, our Handover Spray helps neutralise odour-causing molecules and leaves a fresh scent behind. Not sure what you're dealing with? Start with why your car smells bad.

Made in Melbourne, in small batches

Every jar is made in-house in Melbourne, in a plant-based gel base with fragrance oils used within IFRA usage limits. Our labels carry an allergen declaration.

Small batches mean popular scents can sell out. They usually come back within a couple of weeks.
